Diabetes and foot care - Guide to managing diabetes

1. Eat the right foods
  • Lean meat
  • 5-9 servings of fruit and vegetable each day
  • Fish
  • Dry beans
  • Whole grains
  • Low fat or skimmed milk/cheese
  • Eat foods with reduced fat and salt
  • Eat meals and snacks at approximately the same time each day

 

2. Exercising

  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day to help maintain a healthy weightAim to exercise at roughly the same time each day.
  • Ensure footwear is comfortable and supportiveEnsure socks are breathable
  • Check feet for redness or soreness after activity - Call doctor if sores appear not to heal.
  • Keep your body adequately hydrated by drinking 2 glasses of water before you exercise and an additional 2 glasses for every 20 minutes of activity.
  • Finish your workout with another 2 glasses of water.
  • Warm up for 10 minutes before and after exercising by walking slowly or stretching.
  • Test blood glucose before and after exercising.
  • Do not exercise if your fasting blood glucose level is above 300.
  • If your Blood glucose level is below 100 eat a small snack before partaking in physical activity

 

3. Awareness

  • Know the signs of Hypoglycaemia (Low Blood Sugar)
  • Stop exercising and test your blood glucose if you experience any of the following symptoms:

    - Feeling weak or dizzy
    - Sweating
    - Sudden changes in your heartbeat
    - Major hunger


4. Prepare & React

If your blood sugar is 7.0 or less, eat one of the following immediately:

  • 2 or 3 glucose tablets
  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of any fruit juice
  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of a regular (not diet) soft drink
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) of milk
  • 5 or 6 pieces of hard candy
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar or honey

    It may be a good idea to carry one of the above in case of an emergency when exercising.

Furthermore:

  • Wait for 15 minutes and then test your blood glucose to check it has returned to a healthier level.
  • Make sure friends and family can recognise the signs of hypoglycaemia and it may be a good idea to carry an item of medical identification to alert people to your condition in an emergency.

 

5. Bad habits

  • Quit smoking
  • Limit alcohol intake

 

6. Establish Daily Routines

  • Check your feet for alterations on a daily basis. Brush and floss your teeth daily to avoid problems of the mouth, teeth or gums.
  • Take medicines at the same time each day.


7. Seek Professional Advice

  • Adhere to your Doctors advice about medicines and treatment.
  • Monitor your blood glucose levels the way your Doctor advises.
