Overlapping and underlapping toes

Toes can sometimes overlap or underlap the other toes and can be the cause of constant irritation. The cause of underlapping or overlapping toes is generally unknown. They may be caused by an imbalance in muscle strength of the small muscles of the foot.

If deformed toes are flexible, a simple release of the tendon in the bottom of the toe will allow for them to straighten. If the deformity is rigid, surgery may be needed to remove a small portion of the bone in the toe.

OVERLAPPING TOES

Prevention & treatment

This condition should not be ignored, as left untreated overlapping or underlapping toes can result in infection or severe skin irritation.

Wear shoes with a wide, high toe box that allow the feet room to maneuver. Gel toe straighteners and toe combs are often a good way to keep toes separated and reduce friction.

However if the problem persists consult a Podiatrist/Chiropodist for advice.

To help prevent this condition try Toe Separators or Hammer Toe Splints
