Dry cracking heels (also known as Xeorosis) is mainly a cosmetic problem but can become more serious. Dry cracked heels can sometimes result in heel fissures where the skin cracks and bleeds which can be very painful. If the problem persists or if the skin bleeds it is advised that professional medical advice is sought to prevent the onset of more serious conditions. This is especially important for people with diabetes or vascular problems as the wound could become infected and lead to further complications. Causes:- Hot, dry weather.
- Constantly walking with no shoes or just sandals.
- Inactive sweat glands.
- Obesity.
- Poor footwear and poor air permeability of insoles.
- General aging.
- In some cases: Psoriasis and eczema.
- Wearing backless sandals and can lead to callus build-up development of fissures.
Prevention & treatment:- Daily moisturising with foot creams to keep skin supple.
- Daily bathing and cleaning.
- Use a pumice stone or emery board to rid dry skin.
- Avoid walking barefoot, or wearing sandals/flip-flops.
- Try using foot creams at night with a decent pair of gel socks to ensure absorption.
- Wear shoes with sufficient shock absorbing qualities or with good cushioning insoles.
